The Nintendo console released in 2006 with motion-sensitive controllers was the Wii.
Nintendo launched the Wii as a deliberately accessible home console built around the Wii Remote, a handheld controller that detected movement and pointing. Players could swing, tilt, or aim the controller, making physical gestures part of games such as Wii Sports, Wii Play, and The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess.
The Wii was released in North America on 19 November 2006, followed by Japan, Australia, and Europe later that year. Its unusual control system helped Nintendo reach people who did not usually play video games, including families and older players. The console became one of Nintendo’s biggest commercial successes.
The Nintendo DS was also released during the 2000s and used touch controls, but it is a handheld system rather than a home console. The Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 launched in 2005 and 2006 respectively, yet their standard controllers did not define their platforms around motion-sensitive play. The Wii’s motion-focused design is therefore the key clue.
