March of the Penguins is a 2005 French nature documentary directed by Luc Jacquet. It follows emperor penguins during their annual journey across Antarctica, from the ocean to ancestral breeding grounds and back again as they raise a chick.
The film documents the species’ demanding breeding cycle: adults travel inland, court, lay an egg, and endure severe winter conditions while sharing parental duties. The male typically incubates the egg on his feet beneath a fold of skin while the female returns to sea to feed, after which the parents alternate their journeys.
It was released in France as La Marche de l’empereur and later received an English-language version narrated by Morgan Freeman. At the 78th Academy Awards ceremony on 5 March 2006, it won Best Documentary Feature for Luc Jacquet and producer Yves Darondeau.
