Nintendo’s 1995 console with a red-and-black stereoscopic display and tabletop design was the Virtual Boy.
The Virtual Boy was designed by Gunpei Yokoi and released by Nintendo in Japan and North America in 1995. Unlike later handheld systems, it was placed on a stand and viewed through a built-in display. Its graphics used red LEDs and black backgrounds, producing a limited form of stereoscopic depth.
Nintendo marketed the system as a new three-dimensional gaming experience, but it was uncomfortable for some users and lacked the portability associated with Nintendo’s handheld consoles. Its library was small, and Nintendo discontinued it after a relatively short commercial life.
The Virtual Boy is often labeled a modern VR headset, but it lacked head tracking and did not provide a freely navigable 360-degree virtual world. It is better understood as a stereoscopic gaming console with a fixed viewing position.
