Converse is the Nike subsidiary that makes Chuck Taylor All-Stars.

The shoe began as Converse’s All Star basketball sneaker, introduced in the late 1910s. Basketball player and Converse salesman Charles “Chuck” Taylor helped improve its flexibility and ankle support, and his signature was added to the ankle patch in 1932. That endorsement helped turn the shoe into the Chuck Taylor All Star.

Converse became a major force in American basketball and reportedly held roughly 70–80 percent of the U.S. basketball-shoe market during the 1960s. Although the shoe eventually lost ground on professional courts to newer designs, its simple canvas-and-rubber construction helped it return as a popular casual and cultural style.

Nike acquired Converse in 2003 for about $305 million. Chuck Taylors remain Converse products, not Nike-branded shoes, which is why Hurley, Starter, and Cole Haan are incorrect choices. The modern shoe may be made overseas, but the brand and design belong to Converse.
