Which NHL trophy is awarded annually to the league’s best defensive forward?
Answer
Frank J. Selke Trophy
Answer
Frank J. Selke Trophy
The Frank J. Selke Trophy is awarded annually to the NHL’s best defensive forward.
The NHL introduced the trophy in 1978, naming it for Frank J. Selke, a former general manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs and Montreal Canadiens. Voters from the Professional Hockey Writers Association select the winner at the end of each regular season. The award recognizes a forward’s defensive awareness, checking, positioning, penalty killing, and responsibility in all situations.
The Selke Trophy is often confused with the Norris Trophy, which honors the NHL’s best defenseman, or the Hart Trophy, which recognizes the league’s most valuable player. Bob Gainey won the first Selke Trophy in 1978 and later became the award’s namesake’s successor as Montreal’s general manager. Patrice Bergeron holds the record for most Selke wins.
