Which NHL team was the first to win the Stanley Cup after joining the league in 1967?
Answer
Philadelphia Flyers
Answer
Philadelphia Flyers
The Philadelphia Flyers were the first 1967 expansion team to win the Stanley Cup, taking the championship in 1974.
Philadelphia defeated the Boston Bruins four games to two in the 1974 Stanley Cup Final. The victory came only seven seasons after the Flyers entered the NHL as one of six expansion franchises. Bernie Parent won the Conn Smythe Trophy and the Vezina Trophy that season, while Bobby Clarke won the Hart Trophy.
The Flyers became known for their physically forceful style, earning the nickname “Broad Street Bullies.” Their championship showed that the expansion clubs could overtake established teams from the league’s former core.
The other 1967 expansion teams were the Los Angeles Kings, Minnesota North Stars, Oakland Seals, Pittsburgh Penguins, and St. Louis Blues. St. Louis reached the Final three times before Philadelphia became the first of the group to win it.
