Mud Bruneteau scored the winning goal in the NHL’s longest playoff overtime game, lasting 116 minutes 30 seconds.
Bruneteau ended the marathon for the Detroit Red Wings against the Montreal Maroons on March 24, 1936. His goal came at 16:30 of the sixth overtime period, giving Detroit a 1–0 victory in the first game of their best-of-five semifinal series.
The total overtime duration was 116 minutes and 30 seconds after regulation. The game’s only goal was scored by Bruneteau, a young Detroit forward who had joined the Red Wings after playing in the minor leagues. Detroit went on to win the series and eventually captured the Stanley Cup.
The game is often described as six overtimes, although the winning goal arrived during the sixth overtime period rather than after six complete extra periods. Later NHL playoff games used different overtime structures, but none has exceeded this total elapsed overtime time.
