Which NHL player became the first to score 50 goals in 50 games twice?
Answer
Wayne Gretzky
Answer
Wayne Gretzky
Wayne Gretzky became the first NHL player to score 50 goals in 50 games twice.
He first reached the mark in 1981–82, scoring 50 goals in the Edmonton Oilers’ first 39 games. Gretzky repeated the achievement in 1983–84, reaching 50 goals in the team’s first 42 games. He was the first player to record two such seasons.
The feat is especially rare because it combines a high scoring rate with a strict team-game cutoff. A player must score 50 goals by the end of the club’s 50th game, even if the player misses an individual game.
Mike Bossy also recorded two 50-in-50 seasons, but his second came after Gretzky’s second. Gretzky’s first 50-in-50 season was itself a record because he reached 50 in only 39 games, beating Maurice Richard’s original 50-game standard.
