Which NHL goaltender recorded 22 shutouts for the Montreal Canadiens in the 1928–29 season?

The story behind the answer

George Hainsworth recorded 22 shutouts for the Montreal Canadiens during the 1928–29 NHL season.

Hainsworth’s 22 shutouts remain the NHL record for a single regular season by one goaltender. He achieved the mark in 44 games, meaning he shut out opponents in exactly half of Montreal’s schedule. The Canadiens finished that season with a 22–7–15 record and allowed only 43 goals, an exceptionally low total for the era.

His performance earned him the Vezina Trophy, which at the time was awarded to the goaltender of the team allowing the fewest goals during the regular season. The award was named for Canadiens goaltender Georges Vézina, who had died in 1926.

Hainsworth is sometimes confused with Vézina when people discuss early Montreal goaltending records. Vézina was the first recipient of the trophy bearing his name, but Hainsworth established the famous 22-shutout single-season record. Hainsworth later helped Montreal win the Stanley Cup in 1930 and 1931.
