Ipswich Town played Sunderland on the 2026–27 Premier League opening weekend.
The match was held at Portman Road on Saturday 22 August 2026, one of three fixtures scheduled for a 15:00 BST start. Ipswich returned to the Premier League after only one season away, while Sunderland had also come up from the Championship.
Ipswich won the match 2–1. The result gave the hosts a successful return to the division and made their opening fixture one of the weekend’s meetings between recently promoted sides.
The other promoted clubs had different opening opponents. Coventry City visited Arsenal in the first match of the season, while Hull City hosted Manchester United in the Saturday lunchtime fixture. Those three promoted teams replaced West Ham United, Burnley and Wolverhampton Wanderers in the top flight.
