Coventry City faced Arsenal in the first fixture of the 2026–27 Premier League season.
The match took place at the Emirates Stadium on Friday 21 August 2026. Coventry’s selection for the opening fixture gave the club an immediate test against the reigning champions, while Arsenal began their defence of the Premier League title.
Coventry City had returned to the top division after a 25-year absence. Their promotion was one of the major storylines surrounding the new season, alongside the returns of Ipswich Town and Hull City. All three promoted clubs appeared in the opening round.
The fixture also became a useful example of how the Premier League schedules newly promoted teams: promotion does not guarantee a gentle opening match, and Coventry began against the strongest possible domestic opposition from the previous campaign.
