Defending champions Arsenal hosted newly promoted Coventry City in the first match of the 2026–27 Premier League.
The fixture was played at the Emirates Stadium on Friday, 21 August 2026. It was selected as the season opener, giving Arsenal the first opportunity to begin their title defence in front of their home supporters.
Coventry City had returned to the Premier League after an absence of 25 years. Their promotion made the opening fixture especially notable: the reigning champions faced a club beginning its first top-flight campaign in a quarter-century.
Arsenal won the match 3–0. The result gave the champions a strong start and left Coventry without a goal in their first Premier League match of the season. Ipswich Town and Hull City were the other promoted clubs in the 2026–27 Premier League, while Sunderland also returned to the division.
