Petra is the New7Wonders site located in Jordan. The ancient city lies in southern Jordan, near the modern town of Wadi Musa, and is famous for its monumental buildings cut directly into sandstone cliffs.

Petra was established as the capital of the Nabataean Kingdom. The Nabataeans were an Arab people who controlled important caravan routes linking Arabia with the Levant and the Mediterranean. Their wealth supported Petra’s tombs, temples, streets and sophisticated water-management systems.

The city is entered through the Siq, a narrow natural gorge leading to Al-Khazneh, commonly called the Treasury. Despite its name, the Treasury was probably a monumental tomb rather than a place for storing treasure.

Petra became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1985 and was selected in a 2007 public campaign as one of the New 7 Wonders of the World. It is often confused with a single monument, but Petra is an extensive archaeological city and landscape.
