Fiordland National Park is the New Zealand national park famous for Milford Sound / Piopiotahi.

Located in the southwest of New Zealand’s South Island, Fiordland contains a rugged landscape carved by glaciers. Milford Sound is its best-known fiord, extending inland from the Tasman Sea between steep cliffs and dramatic peaks such as Mitre Peak.

Fiordland was formally established as a national park in 1952 and covers roughly 12,600 square kilometres, making it New Zealand’s largest national park. It forms a major part of Te Wāhipounamu, a UNESCO World Heritage site recognized for its exceptional natural landscapes.

Despite its name, Milford Sound is technically a fiord: a glacially carved valley flooded by the sea. The Māori name Piopiotahi reflects the area’s cultural history, and the dual name became official following the 1998 Ngāi Tahu settlement.
