Which New York school did Georgia O’Keeffe attend under artist William Merritt Chase?
Answer
Art Students League
Answer
Art Students League
Georgia O’Keeffe attended the Art Students League of New York under William Merritt Chase.
She studied there in 1907 and won a still-life prize taught through Chase’s classes. The school provided rigorous training in drawing, painting, and observation, and it was known for offering artists a less formal alternative to traditional academies.
O’Keeffe had already studied at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. After her time in New York, financial difficulties and changing ambitions led her toward teaching and later toward the more experimental ideas that shaped her mature work.
The Art Students League also trained many other important American artists. O’Keeffe’s later abstraction differed considerably from Chase’s academic realism, but her early technical education helped establish her command of composition and paint.
