Which New York photographer first exhibited Georgia O'Keeffe's abstract drawings in 1916?
Answer
Alfred Stieglitz
Answer
Alfred Stieglitz
Alfred Stieglitz first exhibited Georgia O'Keeffe's abstract drawings in 1916.
Stieglitz showed O'Keeffe's charcoal drawings at his New York gallery, 291, in 1916 after receiving them through the artist and educator Anita Pollitzer. The presentation introduced O'Keeffe to an influential circle of American modernists and made her work known beyond the settings where she had taught.
Stieglitz was already a major figure in American photography and modern-art promotion. His gallery, commonly called 291 after its address at 291 Fifth Avenue, exhibited European avant-garde artists as well as emerging American artists.
The professional relationship became personal. Stieglitz photographed O'Keeffe extensively, and the two married in 1924. Their relationship remains important to her biography, but O'Keeffe’s artistic reputation was not limited to his advocacy. She continued to make independent choices, moved permanently to New Mexico in 1949, and developed a body of work that extended well beyond the early abstractions he first displayed.
