Which New York photographer became Georgia O'Keeffe's husband?
Answer
Alfred Stieglitz
Answer
Alfred Stieglitz
Alfred Stieglitz became Georgia O'Keeffe's husband. Stieglitz was a pioneering American photographer, gallery owner, and promoter of modern art who first encountered O'Keeffe's drawings in 1916.
He exhibited her work at his New York gallery, 291, and the two developed a long personal and professional relationship. Stieglitz also made hundreds of photographs of O'Keeffe, creating one of the best-known artist-and-muse collaborations in modern art history.
They married in 1924. Their relationship connected O'Keeffe with New York's avant-garde art circles, although she increasingly sought privacy and spent substantial time away from the city. O'Keeffe later established an independent reputation rather than remaining simply known through Stieglitz's photographs.
Edward Steichen, Paul Strand, and Man Ray were also important modernist photographers, but none was O'Keeffe's husband. Stieglitz remained her spouse until his death in 1946.
