Which New York lake inspired a major series of Georgia O'Keeffe paintings?
Answer
Lake George
Answer
Lake George
Lake George inspired a major series of Georgia O'Keeffe paintings.
O'Keeffe spent part of the 1920s at Lake George, the Stieglitz family estate in the Adirondack region of New York. She painted and drew the lake, surrounding landscape, flowers, leaves, and household objects there.
The Lake George works show how O'Keeffe could transform intimate observations into modernist compositions. Rather than functioning as straightforward travel pictures, many of them use simplified shapes, strong colors, and close framing.
Her later New Mexico paintings sometimes dominate discussions of her career, but Lake George was crucial to her development during the years when she was gaining national recognition. The lake is in northeastern New York near the southern end of the Adirondack Mountains.
