Which New York gallery owner became Georgia O’Keeffe’s husband in 1924?
Answer
Alfred Stieglitz
Answer
Alfred Stieglitz
Alfred Stieglitz became Georgia O’Keeffe’s husband in 1924.
Stieglitz was a pioneering photographer, publisher, and gallery owner who helped introduce modern European and American art to the United States. He first encountered O’Keeffe’s abstract drawings through photographs sent to him by the artist Anita Pollitzer. Stieglitz exhibited O’Keeffe’s work at his New York gallery, 291, in 1916, before meeting her in person.
The relationship became both personal and professional. Stieglitz photographed O’Keeffe extensively, and those portraits formed a major part of his later exhibitions. They married on December 24, 1924. O’Keeffe continued to develop her own artistic direction, even though Stieglitz’s gallery and photographs strongly shaped public awareness of her work.
Stieglitz is sometimes remembered only as O’Keeffe’s husband, but he was also a major force in American photography and modern art. His galleries, including An American Place, showed artists such as Arthur Dove, Marsden Hartley, and John Marin.
