Gallery 291 hosted Georgia O'Keeffe's first solo show in New York.
Gallery 291 was the informal name of the Little Galleries of the Photo-Secession, founded by Alfred Stieglitz at 291 Fifth Avenue in Manhattan. It operated from 1905 to 1917 and exhibited photography alongside modern European and American art.
O'Keeffe's first solo exhibition there opened in April 1917. The show featured abstract works she had made while teaching, and it brought her into the artistic network surrounding Stieglitz. The gallery closed later in 1917, but Stieglitz continued exhibiting O'Keeffe's work at subsequent galleries.
Gallery 291 is sometimes confused with the 1913 Armory Show, a separate and much larger exhibition that introduced many Americans to European modernism. The Armory Show was not O'Keeffe's first solo venue; Gallery 291 was Stieglitz's smaller but highly influential gallery at 291 Fifth Avenue.
