Which New York gallery first exhibited Georgia O'Keeffe's artwork?

The story behind the answer

The New York gallery 291 first exhibited Georgia O'Keeffe's artwork.

Alfred Stieglitz showed O'Keeffe's abstract charcoal drawings at his gallery at 291 Fifth Avenue in New York in 1916. The gallery was officially known as the Little Galleries of the Photo-Secession, but its street number became its familiar name: 291.

The exhibition was important because it introduced O'Keeffe to New York's avant-garde art world before she moved there permanently. Stieglitz had already used 291 to present photography and European modernism, including works by artists such as Pablo Picasso and Henri Matisse. O'Keeffe's first show there is sometimes mixed up with the 1913 Armory Show, a separate exhibition that helped popularize European modern art in the United States. Her first solo exhibition at 291 came in 1917.
