An American Place
Answer
An American Place
Alfred Stieglitz directed An American Place in New York from 1929 until his death in 1946. The gallery became the principal venue for exhibitions of Georgia O'Keeffe's work during those years.
An American Place followed Stieglitz's earlier galleries, 291 and the Intimate Gallery. It opened at 509 Madison Avenue and showed modern art by O'Keeffe, Arthur Dove, John Marin, Marsden Hartley, and other artists associated with Stieglitz's circle.
The gallery's name expressed Stieglitz's interest in defining an American modernist tradition rather than merely copying European models. O'Keeffe's exhibitions there helped establish her as a major American artist. After Stieglitz died in 1946, the gallery closed.
