The 291 gallery gave Georgia O'Keeffe her first solo exhibition in 1917.
The gallery was officially called the Little Galleries of the Photo-Secession and was commonly known by its address, 291 Fifth Avenue in New York City. Alfred Stieglitz ran it and used the space to present photography, modern European art, and innovative American artists.
O'Keeffe’s first solo exhibition there opened in April 1917. It featured drawings and watercolors she had made in Texas and South Carolina, and it brought her work into the New York art world before she moved there permanently. Stieglitz later presented many further exhibitions of her art.
The venue is often simply called 291, which can cause confusion with the year or with the address itself. The Armory Show was another landmark New York exhibition, but it was a large group event and not O'Keeffe’s first solo show.
