Which New York City Subway station reopened in 2018 after being destroyed in the September 11 attacks?
Answer
Cortlandt Street station
Answer
Cortlandt Street station
Cortlandt Street station reopened in 2018 after being destroyed in the September 11 attacks.
The station, on the IRT Broadway–Seventh Avenue Line, was directly beneath the World Trade Center complex and was destroyed when the towers collapsed in 2001. The surrounding subway infrastructure required extensive reconstruction as Lower Manhattan was rebuilt.
It reopened on September 8, 2018, under the name WTC Cortlandt. The rebuilt station includes the permanent artwork “Chorus,” created by Ann Hamilton, whose glass mosaic panels incorporate text from the United States Declaration of Independence and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
Cortlandt Street is often confused with nearby Cortlandt Street stations on other lines and with the World Trade Center station served by the E train. Those are separate station locations, although they are part of the same rebuilding area.
