Which New York City Subway station is the system’s northernmost station?

The story behind the answer

238th Street is the northernmost New York City Subway station.

The station serves the 1 train in the Kingsbridge Heights section of the Bronx. It is located on Broadway near West 238th Street, north of the 242nd Street terminal. Although the 1 train continues a short distance beyond 238th Street, that section is used for storage and access to the Van Cortlandt Yard rather than for passenger service.

The station opened on August 1, 1908, as part of the original IRT Broadway–Seventh Avenue extension into the Bronx. Its elevated structure reflects the early expansion of the subway away from Manhattan’s underground core.

The nearby 242nd Street station is often mistaken for the northernmost station because it is the 1 train’s passenger terminal. However, 238th Street lies farther north geographically and is the system’s furthest-north passenger station.
