Which New York City Subway station is the highest above ground, at about 88 feet?

The story behind the answer

Smith–Ninth Streets is the highest New York City Subway station, standing about 88 feet above ground level.

The station is on the IND Culver Line in Gowanus, Brooklyn, and is served by the F and G trains. It was built on an elevated structure over the Gowanus Canal, placing its platforms unusually high above the surrounding neighborhood.

The station opened in 1933 as part of the Independent Subway System’s Brooklyn expansion. Its height helped provide clearance for canal traffic and the elevated alignment across the waterway.

Coney Island–Stillwell Avenue is another prominent elevated terminal, but it is not the system’s highest station. Smith–Ninth Streets is also distinct from the deepest station, 191st Street, which is in Manhattan.
