Which New York City Subway station is the deepest below street level?

The story behind the answer

191st Street station is the deepest New York City Subway station below street level.

The station serves the IRT Broadway–Seventh Avenue Line in Washington Heights, Manhattan. Its platforms are about 180 feet, or 55 meters, below the streets above. The extreme depth reflects the dramatic topography of northern Manhattan, where the subway passes through the high ground around Washington Heights.

Passengers reach the station through long pedestrian passageways and elevators rather than by descending a conventional short staircase. The station’s main entrance is at St. Nicholas Avenue and West 191st Street, while an additional entrance connects with Fort Washington Avenue.

A common mix-up is confusing deepest with highest elevation. The station is deepest underground, but other stations are notable for being elevated, open-air, or built on bridges. The 168th Street station is also unusually deep, but it is not the citywide record-holder.
