Which New York City Subway station is directly beneath Madison Square Garden?

The story behind the answer

34th Street–Penn Station is the New York City Subway station directly beneath Madison Square Garden.

The station complex is at Seventh Avenue and 34th Street in Midtown Manhattan, beside Pennsylvania Station and beneath the arena’s surrounding blocks. It is served by the 1, 2, and 3 trains on the IRT Broadway–Seventh Avenue Line, with nearby connections to other subway services.

Madison Square Garden opened above Pennsylvania Station in 1968, after the original Pennsylvania Station building was demolished. The subway station’s name reflects the much older transportation landmark below the area: Pennsylvania Station.

Travelers sometimes confuse this station with 34th Street–Herald Square, which is several blocks east and serves B, D, F, M, N, Q, R, and W trains. Herald Square is closer to Macy’s, not Madison Square Garden.
