The 7 train was extended to 34th Street–Hudson Yards in 2015.
The 7 service runs along the Flushing Line between Manhattan and Queens. Its western Manhattan terminus had long been Times Square–42nd Street, but the extension added a station beneath the Hudson Yards district. The new station opened on September 13, 2015.
The extension was built to support development on former rail yards west of Penn Station and to provide direct subway access to the growing commercial and residential area. The 7 is also notable for its purple route color on official subway maps.
The service is commonly called the “7 train,” although the line also operates an express variant marked <7>. The route’s eastern terminal is Flushing–Main Street in Queens, making it a major crosstown connection between Queens and Manhattan.
