Which New York City Subway service uses the Rockaway Park Shuttle route?

The story behind the answer

The S train uses the Rockaway Park Shuttle route.

The Rockaway Park Shuttle links Broad Channel with Rockaway Park–Beach 116th Street in Queens. It provides local service within the Rockaway peninsula and connects with the A train at Broad Channel, allowing riders to transfer between the shuttle and the main subway route.

The shuttle’s current service letter is S, although historical and emergency service patterns have sometimes used other designations. The track occupies part of the former Long Island Rail Road Rockaway Beach Branch, which became part of the subway system after the railroad’s Rockaway route was damaged by fire in 1950.

The Rockaway Park Shuttle should not be confused with the Franklin Avenue Shuttle or the 42nd Street Shuttle. All three use the letter S in route information, but they operate in different boroughs and on different alignments.
