Which New York City Subway service terminates at Van Cortlandt Park–242nd Street?

The story behind the answer

The 1 train terminates at Van Cortlandt Park–242nd Street in the Bronx.

The 1 is the Broadway–Seventh Avenue Local, running between Van Cortlandt Park–242nd Street and South Ferry in Lower Manhattan. It operates entirely on the IRT division, whose routes use numbers rather than letters.

Van Cortlandt Park–242nd Street is the northern terminal of the Broadway–Seventh Avenue Line. The station is beside Van Cortlandt Park, one of New York City’s major public parks, and it connects the subway with the surrounding Kingsbridge and Riverdale area.

The 1 is sometimes confused with the 2 and 3, which also use the Broadway–Seventh Avenue corridor for part of their routes. Those services, however, continue to different northern terminals and do not end at 242nd Street.
