Which New York City Subway route uses the letter M and terminates at Forest Hills–71st Avenue?

The story behind the answer

The M train is the New York City Subway route that terminates at Forest Hills–71st Avenue.

The M is a local service that runs between Forest Hills–71st Avenue in Queens and Middle Village–Metropolitan Avenue in Queens. Much of its route uses the IND Queens Boulevard Line, the IND Sixth Avenue Line, and the BMT Myrtle Avenue Line.

The service became especially distinctive after a 2010 restructuring moved it from Lower Manhattan into the Sixth Avenue corridor. That change created a cross-borough route linking Queens and Brooklyn through Manhattan’s Midtown area.

The M is sometimes confused with the nearby E, F, or R services because all use portions of the Queens Boulevard Line. However, Forest Hills–71st Avenue is the M’s western terminal, while the other services continue to different Manhattan or Brooklyn destinations.
