Which New York City Subway line was extended to Jamaica–179th Street in 1950?

The story behind the answer

The IND Queens Boulevard Line was extended to Jamaica–179th Street in 1950.

The extension carried the Independent Subway System deeper into eastern Queens, providing a rapid-transit connection for neighborhoods that had previously relied more heavily on elevated railways, buses, and the Long Island Rail Road. Jamaica–179th Street became the eastern terminal of the Queens Boulevard subway route.

The station is a large terminal with multiple tracks and layup capacity, reflecting the importance of the extension. It remains a major origin and destination for Queens subway riders. E and F services use the Queens Boulevard corridor, although their exact patterns have changed over the decades.

The route is sometimes confused with the BMT Jamaica Line, which also reaches Jamaica but follows a different alignment and uses lettered services such as J and Z. Jamaica–179th Street belongs to the IND Queens Boulevard Line and is served by the F train.
