Which New York City Subway line includes the Smith–Ninth Streets station, the system’s highest station above ground?

The story behind the answer

The IND Culver Line includes Smith–Ninth Streets, the New York City Subway’s highest station above ground.

Smith–Ninth Streets is in Gowanus, Brooklyn, above the Gowanus Canal. Its platforms are approximately 87 feet above ground, making it the highest subway station in the system. The station is served by the F and G trains.

The station opened on October 7, 1933, as part of the IND Culver Line. Its great height was required to carry the line over the canal and surrounding approaches. The elevated structure also provides broad views across parts of Brooklyn.

The station is often associated with the F train because the F provides the principal north–south service through it, but the G also stops there. Its record concerns elevation above ground, not depth below street level; 191st Street holds the separate distinction of being the deepest station.
