Which New York borough is the birthplace most closely associated with hip hop?

The story behind the answer

The Bronx is the New York borough most closely associated with the birth of hip hop.

Hip hop emerged in the Bronx during the 1970s through interconnected practices including DJing, MCing, breaking, and graffiti. Block parties and community events created spaces where DJs could extend drum breaks and MCs could address dancers and crowds.

DJ Kool Herc’s August 11, 1973 party at 1520 Sedgwick Avenue is widely cited as a foundational moment. Herc used two copies of a record to isolate and repeat instrumental breaks, a technique that encouraged extended dancing.

Hip hop soon spread beyond the Bronx and developed in other New York neighborhoods and cities. The borough is therefore its recognized birthplace, not the only place where early hip-hop culture grew.
