Which New Testament Gospel traces Jesus’s genealogy back to Adam?

The story behind the answer

The Gospel of Luke traces Jesus’s genealogy back to Adam.

Luke presents the genealogy in chapter 3, after Jesus’s baptism and before the account of his temptation. Unlike Matthew’s genealogy, which moves backward from Jesus to Abraham, Luke continues beyond Abraham to Adam and finally describes Adam as the son of God. This makes Luke’s genealogy especially broad in its scope.

The two genealogies differ in their sequence, names, and placement within the Gospels. Christian scholars have proposed several ways to understand those differences, including distinct family lines or theological purposes, but the New Testament itself does not provide a detailed explanation reconciling every name.

Luke’s genealogy supports the Gospel’s wider presentation of Jesus in relation to all humanity, while Matthew emphasizes his connection with Israel’s history. Mark contains no genealogy, and John begins with a theological prologue rather than a family list.
