In the Book of Revelation, how many people are sealed from the tribes of Israel?

The story behind the answer

In the Book of Revelation, 144,000 people are sealed from the tribes of Israel.

Revelation 7 describes 144,000 servants of God being marked with a seal on their foreheads. The total is presented as 12,000 from each of the twelve listed tribes of Israel, producing the symbolic calculation of 144,000.

The passage is followed by a vision of a great multitude from every nation, people, and language. Readers and religious traditions have debated how these two groups relate to each other. Some interpret the number literally, while others understand it symbolically as a complete or idealised people of God.

Revelation later refers again to the 144,000 in chapter 14, where they stand with the Lamb on Mount Zion. The number is therefore one of the book’s most recognisable symbolic figures.
