The New Testament Gospel with 28 chapters, the most of any Gospel, is Matthew.
Matthew is the first book in the New Testament’s traditional order. Its 28 chapters present Jesus as the Messiah and frequently connect events in his life with passages from the Hebrew Scriptures. The Gospel includes major teaching sections such as the Sermon on the Mount and ends with the resurrection and the Great Commission.
The chapter divisions were not part of the original manuscript. They were added centuries later to make long biblical texts easier to reference, so chapter totals describe the modern traditional arrangement rather than an ancient author’s outline. Mark has 16 chapters, Luke has 24, and John has 21, making Matthew the longest Gospel by chapter count.
