Abiquiu was home to Georgia O'Keeffe's second New Mexico residence.
O'Keeffe acquired and restored a former hacienda in Abiquiu in the 1940s. The house, with its courtyard wall and distinctive door, became a major source of imagery in her work. She used the Abiquiu property as a home and studio, especially after spending earlier summers at Ghost Ranch, farther north in the same region.
Abiquiu is often confused with Ghost Ranch because both places are strongly linked to O'Keeffe. Ghost Ranch was the dramatic landscape retreat where she found many subjects, while Abiquiu was the village where she owned her principal New Mexico house. The Georgia O'Keeffe Museum preserves the Abiquiu home as a historic site, and the property remains important for understanding how her surroundings shaped her compositions.
