Abiquiu was home to Georgia O'Keeffe's famous adobe house and door.
O'Keeffe acquired the abandoned adobe house in Abiquiu in 1945 and spent years renovating it before moving in during the late 1940s. The property became both a residence and a working environment, and its architecture entered her art.
A door opening onto a courtyard wall became one of her most recognizable subjects. She painted it repeatedly, including in works such as Black Door with Red and Gray. The isolated door offered a simple geometric form as well as a symbol of the place she had made her own.
Abiquiu is not the same place as Ghost Ranch, where O'Keeffe also lived and worked. Both are in northern New Mexico and are closely connected with her career, while Santa Fe was the city where she died in 1986.
