Abiquiú was the New Mexico village where Georgia O'Keeffe’s home and studio were located.
O'Keeffe acquired the Abiquiú property in 1945 and spent years restoring it before moving there in 1949. The house, including its famous black door opening onto a courtyard wall, became an important source of subjects for her paintings.
Her Abiquiú home was not simply a residence. It was a working studio and a carefully shaped environment that reflected her interest in architecture, texture, light, and repetition. The surrounding landscape also provided the cliffs, hills, and roads that appear throughout her New Mexico work.
Abiquiú is sometimes confused with Ghost Ranch, another New Mexico location strongly associated with O'Keeffe. Ghost Ranch was a separate retreat and source of inspiration, while the Abiquiú house was her long-term home and studio. The two places are in the same broad region but are not the same site.
