Abiquiú held Georgia O’Keeffe’s restored home and studio.
O’Keeffe acquired the Abiquiú property in 1945 and spent years restoring the adobe house. The home had a courtyard and a distinctive black door, a feature that became a repeated subject in her paintings. She used the house as a residence and studio, especially during the later decades of her life.
The property helped connect O’Keeffe’s daily surroundings with her art. Walls, doors, courtyards, and nearby landscapes became sources for compositions that often turned ordinary architectural details into monumental shapes.
Abiquiú is not the same place as Ghost Ranch. Ghost Ranch was the larger northern New Mexico landscape where O’Keeffe also lived and worked, while the Abiquiú home was a separate adobe residence. The Georgia O’Keeffe Home and Studio is now preserved as a historic site.
