Georgia O'Keeffe purchased a home in the New Mexico village of Abiquiú in 1945.
O'Keeffe had visited New Mexico since 1929 and developed a strong attachment to its architecture, cliffs, bones, and desert vegetation. She bought and restored a neglected adobe house in Abiquiú, eventually making it her primary residence. The property included a distinctive walled garden and a gate that became a recurring subject in her work.
Her Abiquiú house offered a quieter base than New York and supported the solitary working habits she preferred. It also placed her close to landscapes that had supplied motifs throughout her career. O'Keeffe later lived much of the year in Santa Fe, where she died in 1986.
Abiquiú is sometimes confused with Ghost Ranch because both locations were essential to her New Mexico life. Ghost Ranch was her other major home and landscape source; the restored adobe residence was in Abiquiú.
