Abiquiú contains the home Georgia O'Keeffe restored and occupied from the 1940s. The property was a traditional adobe compound that she had seen in a deteriorated condition and later made her own.
O'Keeffe began restoring the Abiquiú house in 1945, and it became one of her principal homes. The courtyard, black door, walls, and surrounding landscape appear repeatedly in her work and photographs.
Abiquiú is distinct from Ghost Ranch, where O'Keeffe also lived and painted. Ghost Ranch is a larger landscape property north of the village, while the Abiquiú home is an architectural compound in the village itself. The Georgia O'Keeffe Museum now oversees the property and offers tours when open.
