Abiquiú contains the adobe house Georgia O’Keeffe acquired in 1945.
O’Keeffe purchased the historic Abiquiú house in 1945 after admiring it for years. The property had been abandoned and required extensive restoration. She worked with architect Juan Hamilton to repair and adapt the building, which became her winter home and studio.
The house’s courtyard, gate, walls, and surrounding landscape appear repeatedly in her art. O’Keeffe valued the building’s severe geometry and the way light changed its surfaces. The property also provided a more private base than the Ghost Ranch residence, where she had spent substantial time.
Abiquiú is in northern New Mexico, roughly northwest of Santa Fe. It should not be substituted for Santa Fe, where the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum opened in 1997. The museum holds a large collection of her work, while the Abiquiú property preserves the domestic and working environment in which she lived.
