Abiquiu contains Georgia O'Keeffe's restored historic home and studio.
The Georgia O'Keeffe Home and Studio is in Abiquiu, New Mexico. O'Keeffe began renting the property in 1945 and acquired it in 1949. She worked with architect and builder Juan Hamilton on restoring the adobe house, whose walls, courtyard, and surrounding landscape became closely connected with her later life and art.
The Abiquiu house was not simply a residence. Its doorway, courtyard, walls, and views appear in O'Keeffe's paintings and photographs. The property is now preserved as a historic site and is associated with the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum.
Santa Fe is the larger city most often connected with O'Keeffe because she died there and because the museum is located there. Ghost Ranch is another essential O'Keeffe location, but it was a separate residence and landscape north of Abiquiu. The specific village containing the restored home and studio is Abiquiu.
