The house Georgia O'Keeffe bought in 1945 was in Abiquiú, New Mexico. She transformed the adobe property into a home and studio, and its courtyard door became one of her best-known recurring subjects.
The Abiquiú house had been neglected when O'Keeffe first saw it, but she recognized its architectural potential. After restoration, the property gave her a more private working environment than the larger Ghost Ranch setting. The house is now preserved as the Georgia O'Keeffe Home and Studio.
Abiquiú is sometimes confused with Ghost Ranch because both places were central to O'Keeffe's New Mexico life. They are separate locations: Ghost Ranch lies farther north, while Abiquiú is the village associated with her restored adobe home and studio.
