Abiquiu contained Georgia O'Keeffe's restored adobe home and studio in New Mexico.
O'Keeffe bought the Abiquiu property in 1945 after renting it for years. The house had been abandoned and was in poor condition, but she recognized its possibilities. She worked with architect and builder Juan Hamilton to restore it, and the property became her winter home and studio from 1949 onward.
The house is especially famous for a black door set in an adobe wall. O'Keeffe repeatedly painted and photographed that architectural feature, turning an ordinary detail of the property into a recurring abstract motif. The home's rooms and surrounding landscape also appear in her work.
Abiquiu should not be confused with Ghost Ranch, where O'Keeffe spent summers and found many landscape subjects. Both places are in northern New Mexico, but the Abiquiu home was her year-round base for much of her later career. The property is now preserved by the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum.
