Which New Mexico village contained Georgia O'Keeffe’s permanent home?

The story behind the answer

Abiquiú contained Georgia O'Keeffe’s permanent home.

O'Keeffe acquired and restored a nineteenth-century adobe house in Abiquiú, New Mexico, beginning in 1945. The property included a famous courtyard wall and door that became subjects in her paintings. She valued the house as both a retreat and a place where she could work with privacy.

The Abiquiú home differs from the house she rented at Ghost Ranch. Both places were important, and O'Keeffe often moved between them, but Abiquiú became her permanent home and studio. The Georgia O'Keeffe Home and Studio is now preserved as a historic site.

The village is in northern New Mexico, about fifty miles north of Santa Fe. O'Keeffe’s paintings of the door and surrounding architecture show how she could turn a local, functional feature into a carefully composed abstract form.
