Abiquiu became Georgia O'Keeffe's home and studio after she acquired a house there in 1945.
O'Keeffe purchased a largely ruined adobe house in Abiquiu, New Mexico, in 1945. She had noticed the property's distinctive courtyard wall during earlier visits and later transformed the house into a practical residence and working studio with architect Juan Hamilton's assistance.
The Abiquiu home became one of the places most closely connected with her mature career. Its architecture, doors, courtyard, and surrounding landscape appeared repeatedly in her paintings. It also provided a quieter base after her permanent move to New Mexico in 1949.
Abiquiu is sometimes confused with Ghost Ranch, another New Mexico location associated with O'Keeffe. Ghost Ranch was a separate retreat and source of imagery, whereas the Abiquiu property was her home and studio. The site is now preserved as a historic house museum.
